Hi Joe,

Yes there are safety limits with everything....and there are chapters in our books on transdermal magnesium and sodium bicarbonate titled "warnings and contraindications" which should be read by everyone.

You must have good healthy working kidneys as excess magnesium is excreted by the kidneys readily, but can cause build ups if not working at 100%...there are also interactions with various drugs to be observed. In general no more than about 2000mg/day should be ingested. see: http://magnesiumforlife.com/medical-application/warnings-contraindications/

For sodium bicarbonate you need to watch your pH so it does not go over 7.4 unless doing a specific treatment for cancer which has different parameters altogether. pH should be checked daily and the dosage adjusted accordingly. In general no more than 7 half teaspoons per day for those under age 55 and no more than three half teaspoons for those over age 55.

To S. Jal

The answer to all your questions is yes. But keep a close eye on your blood pressure for using these nutritional supplements may create changes in either lowering your bp or raising it due to the sodium.

Can someone who is taking a low dose of blood pressure medication, specifically a calcium blocker called amlodipine besylate, consume magnesium bicarbonate water or sodium bicarbonate? Also, can they use the Ancient Minerals magnesium oil? My overall energy and health has been compromised by environmental and candida issues, which have in turn made me magnesium deficient and raised my blood pressure. I've not had much success with using oral magnesium due to digestive issues, but the magnesium oil and magnesium bicarbonate sound like they would really be beneficial to me.

Thank you in advance,
S. Jai

Betsy,

Almost everyone is magnesium deficient. We at the IMVA believe that transdermal use of magnesium oil will keep your levels up better than any oral magnesium product. And Yes, magnesium contributes to so many functions in the body including keeping pH more alkaline. Many athletes use baking soda for increased energy. We would recommend you switch to transdermal magnesium, which can also help you recover from sore muscles and any injury you might obtain.

Dr. Sircus wrote an excellent article on Magnesium and Sports, its in the book, but you may also find it online....it is no longer on our magnesium site.

Is there ph health and extra energy to be had from this cocktail? I am not ill, I am a runner and would like extra enery for running races. I would buy the book but have no cancer or health problem and not sure this is for me. I have been drinking 1 teaspoon Bob's Red Mill Baking Soda with water before races. Is that ok? I read it gives you enery thru oxygen. I would like to add it to my Magnesium "Calm" Powder but not sure. I would appreciate any advise. Thank you for many interesting articles!

Dr. Sircus prefers that these (sodium bicarbonate and magnesium) be used separately as stated in his article. But he also says that small amounts can be added to water to taste.

Could you give the recipe for Magnesium Bicarbonate using the Magesium Chloride? I purchased the oil, gel and flakes from Ancient Minerals. I do not see in your article how to actually use these two together. Thank you!
